World Trade Center

Construction workers placed a steal beam on top of the new World Trade Center on Monday, making it New York City's tallest building. One World Trade Center tower stands 381 meters above the streets of downtown Manhattan, surpassing the iconic Empire State Building. When completed, the new building will be 104 stories high and 541 meters tall, which is 1,776 feet, a height chosen to symbolize freedom. One World Trade Center, often called Freedom Tower, is being built at the site of the twin towers of the original World Trade Center.

Enterprise in NY

On Friday April 27, the shuttle Enterprise arrived to NY, where it will be on display at the Intrepid. It's currently at JFK and you can see it as you pass by on the highway. NASA retired the Enterprise in July 2011 after 30 years of orbital service. A total of five shuttles reached space between 1981 and 2011, but only three of these vehicles remain. Like Challenger, the shuttle Columbia was lost along with its entire crew during a mission. The orbiter broke apart while re-entering Earth's atmosphere in February 2003.

Ozzie Guillen on Fidel Castro.Media Updates

Recently, the Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen made a highly controversial statement. Reports surfaced that the upcoming edition of Time magazine quotes him saying, "I love Fidel Castro." He later amended his comment, saying: "I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that [expletive] is still there." This lead to heavy controversy because the Miami Marlins are located in South Florida which has a vast Cuban population, also because of the fact that he somewhat praised Fidel, who is a terrible dictator. He is going back today, on his day off to apologize to the people of Florida as well as reporters.

Facebook buys Instagram.Media Update

Facebook announce on Monday that it purchased Instagram for $1B. Instagram is a very popular photography app, that just recently branched out to Android cellular devices, where people can take a picture and apply effects to them and post them wherever they like. Instagram has rapidly gain popularity and doesn't seem to be stopping now. Facebook purchased Instagram as an attempt to draw more consumers who rely on smartphones and tablets for their digital needs. Two of the biggest media outlets have teamed up and it will make it hard to surpass them.

P.S. 551-day-old Instagram is worth $1 billion. 116-year-old New York Times Co.: $967 million.

Ella Della Donne continues her career.Media Update

Elena Delle Donne, one of the sport’s most hyped prospects in years, has an interesting story behind her. Only two days into her freshman year at the University of Connecticut, Delle Donne left in the middle of the night and returned to her family’s home in Wilmington, Del. She said publicly that she was burned out from basketball, but she knew she was mostly homesick. Delle Donne transferred to Delaware and played volleyball for the Blue Hens during the fall. Six months later she sent a text message to Delaware women’s basketball coach, Tina Martin saying "Will you open the gym?" This text message was the first outward sign that her passion for basketball never left. At the moment, Delaware was 30-1 and a No. 3 seed in the N.C.A.A. tournament. Tina Martin knew she had to hurry to the empty gym and unlock it before Delle Donne changed her mind. Over the next three months, Delle Donne had frequent late-night basketball workouts that were kept secret. Sometimes she waited in her car to make sure all the Delaware players had left the Bob Carpenter Center. She did not want to ignite rumors or invite pressure to decide her future. That spring, Delle Donne decided she would play basketball for Delaware during the 2009-10 season. Now a junior, she is the nation’s leading scorer, averaging 27.5 points a game and she has turned the Blue Hens into a national power.

Baylor Lady Bears.Media Update

Baylor Lady Bears remained undefeated as they beat Notre Dame, 80-61, to become National Champs. They became the first NCAA team to go 40-0 in a season, as they were lead by their 6-foot-8 star Brittney Griner. In the championship game, Griner scored 26 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocked shots, hitting 8 of her 9 shots in the decisive second half. With a title came a Rushmorean legitimacy, confirmation that Griner in her junior season had joined Nancy Lieberman, Cheryl Miller, Chamique Holdsclaw, Diana Taurasi and Candace Parker as the college game’s greats.To top it all off, Brittney Griner is only a junior and will return next year to complete her senior year.

Raf Simons at Dior.Media Update

Parisian fashion house Dior is set to announce Raf Simons as the next creative director replacing John Galliano who was fired last year after making anti-Semitic remarks. The hiring of Raf Simons puts an end to the long and troublesome search by LVMH chairman, Bernard Arnault, for someone to take the reins of the 66-year-old luxury brand. Marc Jacobs, the American star at Louis Vuitton, was a favorite until talks broke down late last summer, reportedly over compensation. Other big names, including Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, rejected Dior’s advances. In Raf Simons, Dior gets a highly-respected designer who was chiefly responsible for the bright colors that washed over much of the affordable clothing market during his time at Jil Sander. In his six years at Jil Sander he expanded its minimalist form to include more feminine shapes, some based on ’50s couture. Among his responsibilities will be overseeing advertising and lending his opinions in other areas as needed.

Media Diary

When the professor gave us the assignment to write about our daily media usage, I knew what mine would look like. Being a photographer makes it inevitable for me to not use the media. Starting in the morning, my alarm is on my phone so that's where it all starts. Since I am a commuter and have 7:30am classes every day, you will not catch me without my headphones in. Bad enough I'm up early, but dealing with other commuters can be annoying. I listen to my iPod on my way to school. At school, I am allowed to use my computer in most of my classes so I engage in more media. On my computer I do many things, take notes, work on photos, blog, catch up on blogs, social networks, and much more. After class is over, I put my headphones back on and continue the day, music gets me by throughout the day. At home, I continue to use media until I go to sleep. Usually doing some editing and checking up social networks tires me out thus falling asleep. Media is seen a lot during my day and I'm not surprised about it. It's just interesting how much of an impact technology has on our society nowadays. Who would've thought this is what the world would be like 20-30 years ago?
